TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | The Grambling State University baseball team earned a hard-fought 6-4 victory over Florida A&M on Friday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.
The win also marked the 100
th career victory for head coach
Davin Pierre.
Mason Martinez (3-2) got the start for the Tigers. He pitched five innings, surrendering four runs on nine hits. Martinez struck out five and walked three.
Shannon Martin led the Tigers offensively going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Martavius Thomas registered a game-high three RBI while going 1-for-4 with a double.
Grambling State opened the scoring in the second inning. With runners on first and second, a throwing error by the Rattlers allowed a run to come across and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The G-Men added on to its lead in the top of the third when
Jaylyn Bennett ripped an RBI single through the left side of the infield to extend GSU's advantage to 2-0. With the bases loaded, Thomas cleared the bases with a three-RBI double the dropped into left, giving the Tigers a 5-0 lead.
FAMU's Brody Poppell hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, cutting GSU's lead to 5-2. The Rattlers tacked on another run in the fourth inning, shrinking Grambling State's advantage to 5-3.
Florida A&M's Ethan Miller's solo homer run the fifth pulled the Rattlers within a run, 5-4.
Grambling State added an insurance run in the top of the eighth when Martin ripped an RBI double to deep left centerfield, making it 6-4.
Ethan Bates earned his fourth save of the season after working four innings and allowing no runs on four hits. He picked up one strikeout in the appearance.
FAMU's Garrett Workman (5-4) was tagged with the loss after working six inning and allowing five runs on six hits. He struck out nine and walked a pair.
