GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State's
Chenar Brown hit a pair of home runs to help lead the Tigers to a 15-5 mercy rule win over Wiley on Tuesday night at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
Brown registered a game-high five RBI while going 3-for-4 with two homers and a double. It was Brown's second multi-homer game of the season, a feat he previously accomplished versus Alabama A&M on March 16.
In total, five G-Men put together multi-hit games.
Cameron Hill also went 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Keanu Jacobs-Guishard went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double and three RBI.
Nyan Hayes (2-for-5) and
Trey Bridges (2-for-5) also picked up multiple hits.
Taylor Dooley (1-1) grabbed his first win of the year, working 2.1 innings and allowing two runs on one hit. Johnson Decoste,
Nick Robinson,
Hampton Phillips and
Brett Washington all saw action in relief.
Robinson had perhaps his best outing of the season, striking out six batters in 2.2 innings of action and giving up no runs on a pair of hits. Phillips was also strong, fanning three batters and surrendering no runs on one hit.
Grambling State (12-19) got things going quickly in the bottom of the first inning. Leading 1-0, Brown walloped a three-run homer to centerfield giving the GSU a 4-0 advantage.
In the second inning, a two-RBI single by Hill grew the Tigers' lead to 6-0. After stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, and a walk issued to Brown, Hill scored on an errant throw on a pickoff attempt by Wiley's catcher, making it 7-0. Brown also advanced to second on the throw.
Aries Gardner's RBI single allowed Brown to cross home and grow the lead to 8-0. And RBI double by Jacobs-Guishard made it 9-0
Wiley (25-14) found some momentum in the top of third, scoring five runs to cut GSU's lead to 9-5.
A two-run homer by Jacobs-Guishard in the fourth inning allowed Grambling State to grow its lead to 11-5.
In the sixth inning,
Nyan Hayes ripped a double to left field with one out. Hill singled, allowing Hayes to score from second. Brown followed that with a mammoth two-run home run blast to left centerfield to give the Tigers a 14-5 lead.
Grambling State put the run rule in effect in the bottom of the seventh when an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt by Jacobs-Guishard allowed Hayes, who was on first base, to score the game-ending run.
UP NEXT
Grambling State travels to Prairie View, Texas for a weekend series versus Prairie View A&M. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. at Tankersley Field.
