Grambling, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team dropped its series opener versus Bethune-Cookman 14-5 on Friday night at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
GSU dropped to 21-24 overall and 16-9 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), while BCU improved to 30-20 and 21-4 in the SWAC.
Trey Bridges led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-4.
Shannon Martin picked up the only extra base hit for GSU, a sixth inning home run, going 1-for-4 with two RBI. Grambling State tallied nine hits while committing three errors.
Bethune-Cookman registered 12 hits, also committing three errors in the contest.
GSU starting pitcher
Mason Martinez (3-2) was charged with the loss after surrendering five runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. He struck out one and walked four.
After BCU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, GSU responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. A Bases loaded wild pitch allowed the Tigers to plate its first run. With runners on second and third, Marcellus poked a two-RBI single through the middle of the infield to put Grambling State in front 3-1.
The Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the second to go up 4-3. A solo home run by Darryl Lee extended BCU's advantage to 5-3 in the fourth.
Martin tied the game 5-5 when he smashed a two-run homer over the left field wall in the sixth.
Bethune-Cookman, however, scored nine unanswered runs over the final three innings to take game one of the series.
BCU's Pablo Torres (2-0) picked up the win after giving up five runs on six hits in 6.0 innings on the mound.

Grambling State resumes its series with Bethune-Cookman on Saturday for Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
