HATTIESBURG, Miss. | The Grambling State University volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Southern Miss on Friday evening inside the Southern Miss Wellness Center, 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-15).
The Lady Tigers (0-8) put together a strong showing in the second set, hitting .286 as a team and keeping pace with the Golden Eagles (6-3), but Southern Miss was able to close the frame and carry the momentum into the third.
Grambling totaled 31 kills on 98 swings for a .143 hitting percentage, while USM registered 40 kills and hit .374 overall.
Morgan Munro and
Rihianna Brown led the offense with seven kills apiece, while
Kenya Lucas added five.
Alayna Howard distributed 17 assists and tallied three service aces, with
Leisey Keli'i collecting a team-high 14 digs.
Ra'Niya Brown contributed two blocks at the net.
Southern Miss was paced by Sadie McAda with eight kills.
Gaby Zovko guided the attack with 27 assists, while Sunni Sheppard anchored the defense with 14 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1: Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead and used a .323 hitting percentage to take the frame, 25-14.
Set 2: Grambling responded with its best stretch of the night, hitting .286 as Munro and Brown powered the attack. The set remained tight until the Golden Eagles pulled away late for a 25-22 win.
Set 3: Southern Miss steadily controlled the final set, hitting .464 while Grambling managed just a .030 percentage, ending the match with a 25-15 win.
