HOUSTON, TX. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team struck first but ultimately lost 3-1 to Rice on Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field.
With the result, Grambling moves to 2-6-2 on the season, while Rice improves to 7-1-1 overall.
The Lady Tigers wasted little time in setting the tone, breaking through in the sixth minute when
Liana Bryant buried a shot off an assist from
Alana Aiken to make it 1-0.
The Owls equalized in the 31st minute as Leah Chancey converted a penalty kick to send the match into halftime knotted at 1-1.
In the second half, Rice pulled away.
Jadyn Jaeger put the Owls ahead in the 63rd minute with help from Eileen Albers and Chancey.
Just 10 minutes later, Albers found the net herself, assisted again by Chancey to extend the lead to 3-1.
Grambling battled throughout, generating nine shots including seven on frame led by Bryant's four attempts.
Aiken,
Kaylen Jankans,
Sophia Lezizidis,
Aubrey Salazar, and
Taya Sands also tested the Rice defense.
Goalkeeper
Jaliyah Clark recorded seven saves while facing 20 Owl shots.
