Grambling State Opens Season with 11-1 Rout of Alcorn State

PEARL, Miss. | Grambling State opened the 2026 season in dominant fashion, rolling to an 11-1 victory over Alcorn State on Friday afternoon at Trustman Park in Pearl, Miss. as part of the MLB HBCU Power Series.

The Tigers wasted no time setting the tone in their season opener. In the bottom of the first inning, Chris Marcellus delivered the first big swing of the year, launching a two-run home run to left field to score Trey. Bridges and give Grambling an early 2-0 lead. The Tigers continued to build momentum in the second inning when Aidan Lopez tripled to left field and later scored on an error. Ryan Davis followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0.

Grambling kept the pressure on in the third inning. Marcellus reached base and eventually scored on an RBI walk by Lopez, and Jaylen Woody added a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 6-0.

The Tigers broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring three runs while capitalizing on walks and wild pitches. Hasani Johnson highlighted the frame with an RBI double, and Grambling stretched the lead to 9-0.

In the fifth, Bridges drove in another run on a fielder's choice to make it 10-0. Alcorn State got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning on an RBI single by J. Hollway, but Grambling answered with one more run in the eighth on an error to close out the scoring.

Marcellus led the Tigers offensively, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, including the season's first home run for Grambling. Bridges finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Johnson went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI double. Lopez added a triple and an RBI, and Woody drove in two runs as Grambling totaled 10 hits and drew six walks.

On the mound, Keeyvn Goss (1-0) earned the win in the season opener, tossing four scoreless innings without allowing a hit while striking out three. Payton Allen closed out the final four innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out four to secure the victory.

Grambling State continues play in the HBCU Power Series on Saturday when it faces Texas Southern. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. and will be streamed on MLB.com.
