Specks Late Heroics Lift Grambling State to Split with Texas Southern

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State Tigers softball team split a doubleheader with Texas Southern on Friday at the GSU Softball Complex, dropping the opener 6–2 before rallying for an 11–10 victory in the second game.

Texas Southern took control early in the first contest, scoring two runs in the second inning highlighted by a solo home run from Karisma Garcia and an RBI triple by Penelope Saenz.

The Tigers added two more runs in the third inning, including a solo homer from Jordyn Talbert extending the lead to 4–0.

Grambling State answered in the bottom of the third.

Kamryn Broussard doubled to right-center to drive in a run, and Cadashia Collins reached on a fielding error that allowed another run to score cutting the deficit to 4–2.

Texas Southern added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the 6–2 win.

Broussard finised 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Hailey Hughes also added a hit, while Jada Carhee scored a run and stole a base.

Hailei Harrell took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs (three earned) over four innings.

Zoe Roland pitched the final three innings in relief surrendering one run on two hits.

In the second game, Grambling State responded with an explosive offensive performance overcoming a late deficit to earn the split.

Texas Southern struck first in the opening inning, but the Tigers answered quickly.

Tavia Leadon delivered an RBI single to tie the game before scoring on a throwing error to give Grambling State a 2–1 lead.

After Texas Southern tied the game in the second inning, the Tigers erupted for six runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Ahsunte' Specks doubled home a run to spark the rally, while Leadon drew an RBI walk.

Ziya Donaldson followed with a two-run single and Hailey Hughes added a two-run single to give Grambling State an 8–2 advantage.

Texas Southern chipped away before erupting for four runs in the sixth inning to take a 10–8 lead.

Grambling State delivered the final response in the bottom of the sixth.

With the bases loaded, Specks lined a double to center field driving in three runs to put the Tigers back in front, 11–10.

Specks finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Hughes went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Toni Purchas added two hits and two runs scored.

Logan-Ray Gaspar also contributed two hits in the win.

Jaidan Richard earned the victory in the circle, tossing a complete game and allowing 10 runs (five earned) on 18 hits while striking out one.

Grambling State totaled 12 hits and drew six walks in the victory.
