GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State erased an early six-run deficit and rallied for the lead late, but Southern answered in the ninth inning and pulled away in the 10th to hand the Tigers a 13-11 loss on Sunday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
The Tigers dropped to 11-23 overall and 8-7 in the SWAC, while Southern improved to 14-20 and 8-7 in conference.
In a game that featured five lead changes and 24 combined runs, Grambling State collected 14 hits and received multi-hit performances from Aidan Lopez, Trey Bridges, Chris Marcellus and Hasani Johnson. Lopez went 3-for-7 with three RBIs, while Bridges finished 3-for-3 with three walks and two runs scored. Johnson added three hits and two RBIs, and Marcellus scored twice while driving in one run.
GSU struck first in the opening inning when Lopez tripled to right field and later scored on Julio Vasquez's RBI single to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. The Tigers added another run in the second as Marcellus singled, stole second and scored on Johnson's RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
Southern responded with four runs in the third inning, highlighted by Glenn Green III's three-run double, to move in front 4-2. The Jaguars added four more runs in the fourth, using Xavier Bradley's three-run double and Kameron Byrd's RBI single to build an 8-2 cushion.
Grambling answered with its biggest inning of the day in the bottom of the fourth.
The Tigers sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to reclaim a 9-8 lead. Lopez delivered an RBI single, Charles Ashe III drew a bases-loaded walk, Vasquez added another RBI walk and Shannon Martin lined an RBI single to center. GSU also capitalized on two wild pitches and another bases-loaded walk during the frame.
Neither team scored again until the eighth inning when Grambling extended its lead. Marcellus singled home Martin to tie the score at 10-10, and Lopez followed later in the inning with an RBI single to center to put the Tigers ahead 11-8.
Southern refused to go away in the ninth.
The Jaguars plated three runs to even the score at 11-11, using an RBI walk by Kenyon Hughes, an RBI fielder's choice and Ryan Hunter's sacrifice fly.
In the 10th inning, Southern took the lead for good when Hughes lined a two-run single to center, scoring Bradley and Jacoby Radcliffe for a 13-11 advantage.
Grambling was unable to answer in the bottom half as Southern reliever Genesis Prosper closed the door to earn the win. Jacobie Smith was charged with the loss for the Tigers.
On the mound, GSUused eight pitchers in the contest. Payton Allen logged three innings in relief and struck out three.

Grambling State travels to Lake Charles, La. for a midweek contest at McNeese State on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Joe Miller Ballpark and will be streamed on ESPN+.
