GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State broke open a tight game with an explosive late surge, scoring eight runs over the final two innings to defeat Prairie View A&M 12-2 on Friday night in the series opener at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
With the win, Grambling State improved to 12-24 overall and 9-7 in the SWAC. Prairie View A&M fell to 7-29 and 3-13 in conference.
Locked in a one-run contest through six innings, the Tigers used a five-run seventh inning and a three-run eighth to turn a 4-2 advantage into a runaway victory.
Keyon Guillory delivered a strong outing on the mound for Grambling State, tossing a complete-game effort while allowing two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Guillory improved to 3-2 on the season.
PVAMU struck first in the opening inning when Ryland Duson lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Ethan Walker for a 1-0 lead.
Grambling answered in the second. Cameron Hill drew a walk, moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and came home on Julio Vasquez's RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
The Tigers grabbed control in the third inning. Hasani Johnson singled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before Aidan Lopez brought him home with an RBI groundout. Two batters later, Trey Bridges launched a solo home run to right field, extending the lead to 3-1.
Prairie View A&M cut the margin to 3-2 in the fourth when Sonnier Moses doubled, stole third and later scored on a wild pitch.
Grambling added an insurance run in the fifth as Ryan Davis reached on a bunt single and advanced on an error before Lopez collected another RBI groundout to make it 4-2.
The decisive seventh inning began with Shannon Martin tripling to center field. After Davis struck out, Dillon Braxton walked and stole second. Lopez then plated Martin with a sacrifice bunt before a series of PVAMUmiscues helped Grambling pull away. Bridges reached on a strikeout wild pitch and eventually scored, while Chris Marcellus later lined a two-run single to right field to cap the frame. When the dust settled, Grambling owned a 9-2 lead.
The Tigers kept attacking in the eighth. Braxton reached on an error and stole second before Lopez singled. Charles Ashe III added a sacrifice fly, and Hill crushed a two-run homer to left field to complete the scoring.
Lopez paced the offense with three RBIs, while Hill went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Marcellus added two hits and two RBIs, and Bridges homered, scored twice and drove in one. Grambling finished with 10 hits and took advantage of two Prairie View errors.
Tyvon Moore led Prairie View A&M offensively, going 3-for-4, while Moses added two hits and a run scored.
