GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State used timely execution and a dominant performance in the circle to secure a 2–1 win over Southern on Saturday morning at the GSU Softball Complex.
In a game where runs were hard to come by Grambling broke through first in the fourth inning.
With runners in motion,
Z'Natria Evans reached on a fielder's choice that allowed
Jada Carhee to cross the plate giving the Tigers a 1–0 lead.
Southern answered in the fifth, capitalizing on an RBI single from Asia George to even the score at 1–1.
Grambling responded in the bottom half of the inning as
Tavia Leadon delivered a productive out, grounding to third base and bringing
Malaysia Ponder home on the play to reclaim a 2–1 advantage.
From there, it was all about
Erin Gibbs.
The right-hander was locked in tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on six hits.
Gibbs worked out of multiple jams stranding seven runners and keeping Southern off the scoreboard over the final two innings to secure the win.
Offensively, Grambling managed three hits.
They were led by
Jada Carhee who went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate and scored a run.
Southern out-hit Grambling 6–3, but couldn't capitalize in key moments as the Tigers defense and pitching held firm.
