HOUSTON, TX. | Grambling State dropped the opening game of its Southwestern Athletic Conference series against Texas Southern, falling 12-0 to on Friday afternoon at Turner Park.
Texas Southern (26-10) wasted no time setting the tone, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding four more in the second to build an early 8-0 advantage.
The Tigers continued to apply pressure in the fourth inning scoring four additional runs to extend the lead to 12-0.
Grambling State (14-26) recorded five hits on the afternoon but was unable to generate any scoring opportunities against Texas Southern pitcher Zaria Turner, who tossed a complete-game shutout with six strikeouts.
Alexis Hope led Grambling at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2.
Logan-Ray Gaspar,
Kamryn Broussard, and
Tavia Leadon each added a hit for the Tigers.
Erin Gibbs (3-3) took the loss in the circle for Grambling State, allowing eight runs on eight hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Jaidan Richard provided relief giving up four runs over the final 2.2 innings.
Texas Southern finished with 13 hits.
