Grambling State University Athletics

CARROLLTON, Ga. | The Grambling State University volleyball team split its two matches at the West Georgia Invitational on Friday, defeating West Georgia 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 15-11) after falling to Presbyterian 3-1 (30-32, 25-12, 25-20, 25-21) earlier in the day.

Match 1 – Presbyterian College

Grambling State (0-1) battled Presbyterian in a tightly contested opening set but ultimately fell 3-1 to the Blue Hose (1-0) in its first match of the season.

Kenya Lucas led the Lady Tigers with 15 kills and added two blocks. Lyric Jordan contributed 10 kills and a block, while Angelique Pena recorded eight kills and a block.

Alayna Howard directed the offense with 17 assists and added a team-high 20 digs. Reece Cook tallied 13 assists and two service aces, while Asialin Powell recorded three aces and 14 digs. Piper Nelson chipped in 10 digs.

Presbyterian was led by Courtney Williams and Ashley Miller with 14 kills apiece, while Anisa Dorlouis added 12 kills. Dorlouis also recorded 33 assists, and Celimar Hoyos posted a match-high 28 digs.


Match 2 – University of West Georgia

Grambling State (1-1) bounced back in the evening match, rallying past host West Georgia (1-1) in a five-set thriller.

The Lady Tigers overcame a 25-20 opening-set loss before taking the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-23. After West Georgia forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-19 fourth-set win, Grambling State closed out the match with a 15-11 victory.

Lyric Jordan paced the Lady Tigers with 16 kills, while Kenya Lucas added 13 kills. Bailey Hollis contributed seven kills and a team-high five blocks. Angelique Pena also recorded five blocks.

Reece Cook and Alayna Howard each tallied 21 assists to lead the Grambling State offense. Howard also added three service aces, while Asialin Powell led the defensive effort with 23 digs. Nelson added 10 digs, while Jordan finished with seven.

Grambling State finished the match with 54 kills, 49 assists and 67 digs. 

For West Georgia, Valiree Schmus led all players with 19 kills, followed by Grace-Blythe Cornett with 15 and Brooke McCall with 13. Anezka Ourednikova recorded 45 assists, while Giorgia Mandotti led the Wolves with 20 digs.
