FORT WORTH, Texas | Grambling State football takes its first road trip of the 2026 season Saturday night when the Tigers travel to Amon G. Carter Stadium to face TCU in a highly anticipated nonconference matchup.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT, with the game available for streaming on ESPN+. The contest marks the second meeting between Grambling State and TCU, with the Horned Frogs holding a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series following a 56-0 victory over the Tigers on Sept. 8, 2012.
GSU enters the matchup with a 2-0 record after opening the season with consecutive victories over Clark Atlanta and Central State. The Tigers have combined to score 97 points in their first two games while allowing 33, establishing an explosive offensive attack and a defense that has created timely plays.
The Tigers opened the season with a 49-7 victory over Clark Atlanta before returning home last Saturday and defeating Central State, 48-26. Grambling State finished the Central State contest with 644 yards of total offense, including 361 rushing yards, while converting 9 of 12 third-down opportunities.
The Tigers have been one of the nation's most productive offenses through the opening two games, averaging 48.5 points and 565.5 total yards per game. GSU has accumulated 1,131 yards of total offense, including 584 rushing yards and 547 passing yards.
Grambling State's balanced attack has produced 14 offensive touchdowns through two games, with 10 coming on the ground and four through the air.
GSU rushing attack has been particularly impressive through the opening two games. The Tigers have produced six rushing touchdowns against Central State alone, with
Tony Phillips Jr.,
Jamarion Parker,
Byron Eaton Jr.,
D'Shaun Ford,
Clyde McClendon Jr. and
Hayden Benoit each finding the end zone on the ground.
Phillips Jr. has emerged as one of the Tigers' early offensive playmakers. Against Central State, he broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run, while Parker opened the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown run. Eaton Jr. later added a 58-yard touchdown burst as Grambling State repeatedly created explosive plays on the ground.
Quarterback
Reginald Johnson has also helped provide balance to the Grambling State offense. Johnson completed 18 of 23 passes for 258 yards against Central State while spreading the ball to eight different receivers.
Tyson George led the receiving corps with five catches for 93 yards, while
Jordan Bride added three receptions for 70 yards.
Through two games, GSU has shown the ability to control games with both its running and passing attacks. The Tigers totaled 487 yards in their season-opening win over Clark Atlanta and followed that performance with 644 yards against Central State.
Defensively, Grambling State will face one of its biggest challenges of the young season against a TCU offense looking to rebound from its season-opening loss.
The Horned Frogs enter Saturday's game 0-1 after falling to North Carolina, 15-10, on Aug. 29 in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland. TCU opened the game with a 10-3 lead but was held scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
TCU quarterback Jaden Craig completed 20 of 32 passes for 175 yards in his first game with the Horned Frogs, while running back Jeremy Payne rushed for 142 yards on 25 carries. Wide receiver Ed Small led TCU with 65 receiving yards.
Craig enters the season with an impressive résumé after transferring to TCU from Harvard. He finished his Harvard career as the program's all-time leader in passing yards and touchdown passes and set school single-season records with 2,869 passing yards and 25 touchdown passes in 2025.
Payne also represents a major challenge for the Tigers' defense. He rushed for 623 yards and five touchdowns in 2025 and opened the 2026 season with a 142-yard performance against North Carolina.
Saturday's matchup also presents an opportunity for Grambling State to measure itself against an FBS opponent and one of the Big 12 Conference's established programs.
SERIES HISTORY
- Saturday's contest marks just the second meeting between Grambling State and TCU.
- The Horned Frogs lead the all-time series, 1-0, with the previous meeting taking place in Fort Worth during the 2012 season.
TCU won that contest, 56-0.
VERSUS FBS OPPONENTS
- Grambling State is 8-26 all-time versus current Division I FBS programs.
- The Tigers' most recent FBS victory came on Sept. 28, 1985, when Grambling State defeated Oregon State, 23-6. That victory was also lengendary head coach Eddie Robinson's 323rd career victory which tied him with Paul "Bear" Bryant.
- GSU is 2-2 against defunct FBS teams (1-1 vs. Long Beach State ; 1-1 vs. Cal-State Fullerton).

JOHNSON LEADING THE PASSING ATTACK
- Quarterback Reginald R.J. Johnson has directed a productive Grambling State offense through the first two games.
- Johnson completed 18 of 23 passes for 258 yards against Central State while spreading the ball around to eight different receivers.
- He enters the TCU matchup having thrown for 258 yards in the Tigers' most recent contest.
- Wide receiver Tyson George has emerged as one of GSU's leading targets. George caught five passes for 93 yards against Central State, including a long reception of 50 yards.
- Jordan Bride added three receptions for 70 yards, while Nae'Saan Dickerson recorded five catches for 44 yards.
GROUND GAME BY COMMITTEE
- The Tigers have shown considerable depth in the running game.
- Against Central State, Grambling State had nine players record at least one rushing attempt.
- Tony Phillips Jr., Jamarion Parker and Byron Eaton Jr. each averaged more than 10 yards per carry, while Zerrick Jones contributed 48 rushing yards.
- GSU's ability to create explosive plays on the ground will be a key storyline against a TCU defense that allowed North Carolina to control portions of the game on the ground in the Horned Frogs' season opener.
DEFENSE MAKING PLAYS
- Grambling State's defense has also made its presence felt through the first two games.
- Against Central State, the Tigers recorded two sacks, six tackles for loss and two interceptions while also blocking a field goal.
- Lonell Cunningham led GSU with seven total tackles, while Marcellius Johnson added five tackles and a tackle for loss.
- Donte Hookfin recorded four tackles, including a tackle for loss and a sack.
- The Tigers also forced a fumble in the fourth quarter when Jalen Guillard forced a fumble that was recovered by Marcellius Johnson.
SPECIAL TEAMS
- Grambling State's special teams unit contributed to the victory over Central State.
- Markeis Sykes blocked a Central State field-goal attempt, helping keep points off the scoreboard
- Diego Alfaro also connected on both of his field-goal attempts against the Marauders, hitting from 19 and 24 yards.
THE THIRD-DOWN STORY
- One of the biggest statistical advantages for Grambling State against Central State came on third down.
- The Tigers converted 9 of 12 third-down opportunities, a 75-percent success rate.
- GSU also held the ball for 33:11 compared with Central State's 26:49 and finished with 26 first downs.
