DALLAS, Texas | The Grambling State University football team dropped a hard-fought 21-14 decision to Prairie View A&M on Saturday night in front of a crow of 42,942 in the 101st State Fair Classic at the Cotton Bowl.
The Tigers (2-2 overall, 0-1 SWAC) led 7-0 in the second quarter and battled throughout the contest before Prairie View A&M (2-3, 2-0) scored 14 unanswered points across the third and fourth quarters to take control.
Grambling State finished with 265 yards of total offense, including 193 passing yards, while holding Prairie View to 317 yards. The Tigers' defense also recorded four sacks and limited the Panthers to 3.6 yards per rushing attempt.
The Tigers struck first midway through the second quarter when Ashton Frye connected with Nae'Saan Dickerson for a 50-yard touchdown with 7:36 remaining in the half. The scoring play capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive and gave Grambling State a 7-0 advantage.
Frye completed 1 of 3 passes for 50 yards, with his lone completion going for the touchdown. Dickerson finished with two receptions for 52 yards, including the 50-yard scoring reception.
Prairie View answered late in the second quarter when Tevin Carter found Travon Jones for a 37-yard touchdown with 3:39 remaining, tying the game at 7-7.
Grambling State's defense kept the game tied heading into halftime. With Prairie View threatening late in the second quarter, Jon Horton and Corey Amos combined for a sack of Carter on fourth down at the Grambling 34-yard line, ending the Panthers' scoring opportunity.
The Panthers took their first lead of the night in the third quarter.
Prairie View put together an 83-yard scoring drive that lasted more than five minutes, with Jahbari Kuykendall finishing the possession with a 17-yard touchdown run with 5:40 remaining in the quarter. The score gave the Panthers a 14-7 advantage.
Grambling State responded with a promising drive late in the third quarter. Jacobe Robinson connected with Davon Mitchell for gains of 26 and 11 yards before Patrick Williams II added a 17-yard completion to move the Tigers inside the Prairie View 35-yard line.
However, the drive stalled when Robinson was sacked for a 25-yard loss, forcing Grambling State into a third-and-34 situation. The Tigers were unable to convert and punted to open the fourth quarter.
Prairie View extended its lead with a 77-yard drive early in the fourth quarter. Carter capped the possession with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kheagian Heckaman with 9:13 remaining, putting the Panthers ahead 21-7.
Grambling State continued to battle.
The Tigers drove from their own 25-yard line to the Prairie View 39 before the Panthers' defense forced a turnover on downs with 6:00 remaining. Grambling State's defense then forced Prairie View to punt, giving the Tigers another opportunity with 3:57 left.
Robinson immediately moved the offense downfield, connecting with Jordan Bride for a 15-yard gain before finding Tyson George for a 47-yard touchdown with 3:10 remaining. Theodore Caballero's extra point cut the deficit to 21-14.
George finished the night with two receptions for 63 yards, including the 47-yard touchdown. Bride added two catches for 23 yards, while Mitchell finished with two receptions for 37 yards.
With an opportunity to get the ball back, Grambling State's defense was unable to force a final stop. Carter rushed for 12 yards and 15 yards on consecutive plays to move Prairie View across midfield before Kuykendall converted a third-and-2 with a 5-yard run to secure a first down. The Panthers then ran out the clock.
Robinson completed 9 of 18 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown while adding 11 net rushing yards. As a team, Grambling State completed 12 of 24 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns.
D'Shaun Ford led the Tigers' rushing attack with 31 yards on eight carries, while Byron Eaton Jr. added 21 yards on four attempts. Jamarion Parker contributed 12 yards on four carries.
Defensively, Lonell Cunningham led Grambling State with 11 tackles, including seven solo stops. Marcellius Johnson recorded 10 tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack, while Horton finished with six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Christen Williams added six tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.
