Grambling, La. (Women's Volleyball) -- The Grambling State University Lady Tigers women's volleyball team took the court on Saturday against Texas Southern University in their second game of Southwestern Athletic Conference play. A quiet Hobdy Assembly Center erupted in set three as sophomore Kevreion Ward and freshman Chasity Nicks combined for 8-of-12 set three kills to win Grambling States only set 25-21. Despite Grambling weathering a 2-0 deficit the Texas Southern (6-7, 2-0 SWAC) won the match 3-1 with set scores of 15-25, 12-25, 25-21, and 19-25.
Grambling State (1-4, 1-1 SWAC) Ward has the ability to emerge as one of the top hitters in the conference with nine kills, three digs, and 11 points. Junior Desiree Bishop recorded four kills and 7.5 points. Defensively, Alleeyah Hensley added 13 digs.
SET ONE
Texas Southern sprinted to a quick 7-0, led and never looked back winning the first set, 15-25. A TSU attack error (eight in the set) broke their momentum scoring Grambling State's first point. Ward and Kitagbe Cisse recorded five kills to keep the set close.
SET TWO
A Bishop tallied a kill that halted a Texas Southern 5-0 run, but the TSU hitting surge was too much to overcome for the Lady Tigers as they fell in set two, 25-12. Texas Southern out hit Grambling State .208 percent to -.214 percent and Texas Southern ended the set with 11 kills.
SET THREE
Ward and Nicks played lights out on the offensive end as the Lady Tigers got their roar back in set three winning, 25-21. Grambling State's intensity denied Texas Southern from a possible 3-0 win. Ward and Nicks combined for 17 total attacks. Ward and Bishop teamed up for two blocks.
SET FOUR
The Lady Tigers opened the fourth set on fire. A Nicks block tied the game at 3 and back to back Brown assisted blocks gave Grambling a slim 5-4 lead. The Lady Tigers kept the rally going with two Ward kills and TSU error, Grambling State led 10-9. Texas Southern found a way to finish the set and escaped with a win, 25-19.
