Lady Tigers split pair at SWAC Round-up

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Grambling State University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday to open play at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Round-up at Lockhart Gymnasium, hosted by Alabama State University.
 
The Lady Tigers (10-16 overall, 4-5 SWAC) began the day with a 3-1 victory over Jackson State. Grambling State completed the season sweep with scores of 22-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-20. The Lady Tigers concluded the first day with a 3-0 loss to Alabama State (25-14, 25-15, 25-18).
 
Against Jackson State, Chasity Nicks paced the offense with 21 kills and seven digs. L'Muriell Thrower and Diemend Richardson recorded 26 and 20 assists, respectively. Talicia Lang led the way defensively with 14 digs, while Erineka Mollere added 13.
 
Alexandra Burney led the way offensively for Jackson State with 13 kills and 13 digs. Sapphire Simpson registered 37 assists and six digs. Defensively, Jackson State was led by Tyler Moorer with 16 digs, while Camry Dabney tallied 11.
 
 Against Alabama State, Nicks, Lang and Kevreion Ward each finished with six kills. Thrower led the way with 11 assists. Mollere paced the defense with seven digs.
 
Ni'Yesha Brown and Bayle' Bennett led the way for Alabama State with 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Kori Kursch finished with 20 assists, while Justus Tuiolosega added 14.
 
Inside the Numbers
· Against Jackson State, Chasity Nicks hit .528 in 36 attempts with 21 kills and just two errors.
· Grambling State, in the opening match, registered 50 kills, 48 digs, 46 assists, 15.0 total team blocks and nine service aces.
· Against Jackson State, there were 12 ties and eight lead changes.
· Grambling State hit .346 in the second set with 12 kills and .342 in the fourth set (.342) against Jackson State.
· Against Alabama State, Grambling State finished with 23 kills, 31 digs, 22 assists, six total team blocks and two service aces.
· Against the Lady Hornets, there were 14 ties and seven lead changes in the three-set match.
 
Up Next
Grambling State returns to action for a pair of SWAC matches on Saturday. The Lady Hornets will face off against Alabama A&M at 10 a.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome and conclude the second day of the SWAC Round-up at 3 p.m. against Alcorn State.
