Grambling State rallies for five-set victory

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Grambling State University volleyball team rallied for a 3-2 victory over Mississippi Valley State to conclude the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Round-up, hosted by Alabama State University at Lockhart Gymnasium.
 
The Lady Tigers (12-18 overall, 6-6 SWAC) dropped the opening set, 25-18, but bounced back with a 25-13 win in the second set. The Devilettes grabbed a 2-1 advantage with a 25-17 third-set victory, but again the Lady Tigers battled back and won the fourth set, 25-12. Grambling State took the match with a 15-11.
 
Kevreion Ward paced the Grambling State offense with 15 kills and six digs. Chasity Nicks added 12 kills and 16 digs. L'Muriell Thrower and Diemend Richardson finished with 24 and 21 assists, respectively. Defensively, Erineka Mollere led the way with 28 digs, while Kiara Freeman tallied 10.
 
Kalin Barnes led the way for Mississippi Valley State with 11 kills and 15 digs. Jaime Polk registered 24 assists, while Brianna Watkins added 11. Jessica Bell paced the defense with 30 digs, and Taylor Selfridge chipped in with 18.
 
Inside the Numbers
· Grambling State finished the match with 52 kills, 84 digs, 51 assists, 12 total team blocks and nine service aces.
· Mississippi Valley State tallied 39 kills, 81 digs, 36 assists, eight total team blocks and four service aces.
· The Lady Tigers held the Devilettes to just an .065 hitting percentage.
· Grambling State hit .292 in the fifth set with 11 kills on 24 attempts.
· There were 17 ties and five lead changes.
 
News & Notes
· Grambling State has now won 12 matches, which is the most prior 2011 and is 6-6 in SWAC contests.
· The Lady Tigers improved to 4-3 in five-set matches.
· Grambling State split the season series with Mississippi Valley State.
· The Lady Tigers conclude the SWAC Round-ups with sweeps of Jackson State and Alcorn State.
