Grambling State University Athletics

BATON ROUGE, La. | The Grambling State University volleyball team concluded the regular season with a 3-2 victory over rival Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match on Saturday morning.
 
The Lady Tigers (16-22 overall, 9-9 SWAC), who snapped a two-match losing streak, took the opening set, 27-25, but fell in the second set, 25-12. Southern (8-20, 8-10) grabbed the third-set victory, 25-22. Grambling State outlasted Southern in the fourth set, 27-25 to force a fifth set. The Lady Tigers won the match with a 15-11 victory.
 
Kevreion Ward finished with a match-high 25 kills, while Talicia Lang added 10 kills. Diemend Richardson and L'Muriell Thrower chipped in with 28 and 23 assists, respectively. Defensively, Erineka Mollere tallied 19 digs, while Kiara Freeman and Lang recorded 13 and 10.
 
Arabella Hall tallied 13 kills to pace Southern. Vaterra Calais and Princess Stark added 23 and 18 assists. Bailey Jefferson paced the defense with 20 digs, while Mariah Clayton and Sameera Mohamed each tallied 12.
 
Inside the Numbers
· Grambling State finished with 58 kills, 57 digs, 53 assists, 14.0 total team blocks and eight service aces.
· Southern tallied 48 kills, 66 digs, 45 assists, 13.0 total team blocks and seven service aces.
· The Lady Tigers hit .292 in the fifth set with 12 kills on 24 attacks and five errors.
· The Lady Jaguars hit. 000 in the final set with just three kills in 15 attempts and three errors.

· Grambling State split the season series with Southern.
· The Lady Tigers finished with the regular season with 16 wins, including nine in the SWAC.
· Both Grambling State and Southern qualify for the 2017 SWAC Volleyball Tournament.

Grambling State will return to action Nov. 17-19 in the 2017 SWAC Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Jackson State University. The Lady Tigers will enter the tournament as the No.5 seed and will face the No. 4 seed, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, in the quarterfinals on Friday.
