Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brandon-Michael LaGarde, GSU Athletic Media Relation

Lady Tigers Race Past Texas Southern, Move to First in SWAC

GRAMBLING, La. (Women's basketball) - The Grambling State University Lady Tigers are lethal with numerous weapons and it was apparent as they cruised past the top ranked conference team, the Texas Southern University Lady Tigers, 64-52 on Saturday night at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Center.

The Lady Tigers delivered Texas Southern (14-8, 8-3 SWAC) their worst conference loss, 12 points, since January 2, 2013 when Southern beat TSU by 12 also. GSU's Jazmin Torian was a beast in the paint scoring game-high 22 points and five rebounds. Torian, a post player with a deep ball ability drilled two 3-pointers. She has scored double digit points in each of the Lady Tigers last five games.

Lady Tigers (10-12, 9-3 SWAC) weapons of Shakyla Hill and Jazmin Boyd impacted Grambling State's biggest win of the year. Hill was majestic with the basketball scoring 10 points, with six helpers, two steals, and grabbed eight rebounds. Boyd added 19 points on three 3-pointers, with three steals and three assists.

"We were ready for them [Texas Southern]," said Head Coach Freddie Murray. "We knew a lot of what they wanted to do. We knew a lot of what we didn't do at Texas Southern the first time. So, we wanted to build on that and we were able to do some good things. We started a little slow they gave us some problems early. But we stayed the course, to what we have been working on this whole week and we came out with a victory."

"Good ball movement worked for us and we played together. We have a lot of people on the team that can score and one of the problems that can poses is everyone looking for their shot. We're just trying to get them to play off each other, share the ball more and play for the next person. And we did a great job of playing team basketball tonight," added Murray.

Grambling  led by as many as 17 points, forcing 20 turnovers to capitalize with 15 points off of turnovers. The Lady Tigers led 57-40 with 5:33 left.

"I just tried to be aggressive the whole game," Torain said. "At the beginning of the first half my shot was failing. So, my coaches told me just get to the cup so I went to the basket and it was working for me. I'm starting to become comfortable and more confident. My teammate are supporting what I'm doing. But I'm just starting to get comfortable in rhythm."

The Lady Tigers will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 13 as the team hosts Prairie View A&M University in the Hobdy Assembly Center. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
