Lady Tigers Continues Win Streak Against Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. (Women's basketball)  -- The Grambling State University Lady Tiger basketball team took their talents to Southern University on Saturday afternoon. GSU did not disappoint as they dominated the Lady Jaguars and took the win, 70-63.

Grambling (9-12, 7-3 SWAC) started out slow but got back on track to lead the score for majority of the first half. The largest lead the Lady Tigers were able to snap was 15 points at the 2:20 mark of the second quarter. Chantiara Lewis nailed a jumper to make the score 32-17.

Throughout the second half, Southern (8-10, 6-4 SWAC) attempted to mount a comeback but GSU quickly thwarted it. The Lady Tigers maintained the lead for the rest of the game. The game's last basket was scored by Courtney Parson of Southern with one second left to set the final score.

Two Lady Tigers finished the day with double-doubles. Jazmin Torian led the team for with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Shakyla Hill finished 12 points and 14 rebounds. Monisha Neal ended the game with 13 points. Hill led the team in assists with nine.

???????Grambling was 39.3 percent from the field, 25 percent from three point range, 72 percent from the free throw line.

Briana Green was the leader for Southern with 13 points and eight rebounds. Green was followed by Courtnei Purnell with 12 points and seven rebounds. Skylar O'Bear rounded out the top scorers with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals. Kadesha Berry had a team high five assists.

The Lady Jaguars were 39.4 percent from the field, 25 percent from the arc, and 50 percent from the stripe.

GSU will be back in action on Monday as the team faces Alcorn State University on the road. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
