GSU wins five-set thriller over Centenary

GRAMBLING, La. | Chasity Nicks registered a match-high 17 kills as the Grambling State University volleyball team won a five-set thriller on Monday night with a 3-2 victory over Centenary at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
 
The Lady Tigers (4-10) took the match, 19-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-25, 15-9.
 
Nicks finished the night with 17 kills on 43 attempts (.279 hitting percentage) and seven digs. Kevreion Ward added 13 kills and four digs. Diemend Richardson and L'Muriell Thrower recorded 27 and 21 assists, respectively, while Erineka Mollere chipped in with 39 digs.
 
Desiree Frey recorded a double-double of 11 kills and 17 digs, while Hailey Lawson added 10 kills and 14 digs. Brittany Risner and Allison Lazewski had 15 and 14 assists each. Marissa Sandoval led the Ladies defensively with 19 digs.
 
Turning Point
After dropping the first set to Centenary, Grambling State began the second with a 9-0 lead. But that advantage evaporated as The Ladies (6-5) used a 16-7 run to the tie match at 16. Grambling State fell behind 21-19, before closing out the set on a 6-0 run.
 
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 17-9 advantage in the third set and cruised to the 25-17 win.
 
In the fourth set, the Ladies led the entire time and rolled to the 25-15 victory, which set the stage for the fifth and final set.
 
The Lady Tigers quickly fell behind, 2-0, in the fifth set, but outscored Centenary, 8-3 to take an 8-5 lead. Grambling State proved to be too much down the stretch to pick up its fourth win of the season.
 
Inside the Numbers
· Grambling State finished the match with 54 kills, 79 digs, 53 assists, 13 total team blocks and four service aces.
· The Lady Tigers held the Ladies to an .043 hitting percentage (34 kills on 164 attempts).
· Grambling State recorded a .102 hitting percentage in the match (54 kills on 176 attempts).
· Centenary registered 34 kills, 71 digs, 32 assists, seven service aces and five total team blocks.
 
News & Notes
· Grambling State finished a stretch of five matches in four days.
· During the five-match stretch, the Lady Tigers went 2-3.
· The 3-2 victory on Monday night was the first five-set win of the season as the Lady Tigers were 0-2 in their previous attempts.

Grambling State will have one more non-conference match before entering Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play as the Lady Tigers play host to Tougaloo College at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
