GSU falls on the road to McNeese State

LAKE CHARLES, La. | Chasity Nicks finished with eight kills and six digs, but it wasn't enough as the Grambling State University volleyball team fell in three set, 3-0, to McNeese State at Memorial Gym on Monday night.
 
The Cowgirls (3-4) won the match 25-12, 25-11, 25-17.
 
Nicks tallied a .174 hitting percentage as she finished the night with eight kills on 23 attacks. Kiara Freeman added 13 digs, while L'Muriell Thrower just missed a double-double as she finished with 23 assists and nine digs.
 
Shanna Spree led the way for McNeese State offensively with nine kills and five assisted blocks. Adison Giambrone recorded 22 assists, while Angela McGownd tallied 19 digs.
 
Turning Point
The Lady Tigers (1-7) fell behind 20-10 in the opening set as the Cowgirls controlled play from the onset. McNeese State finished set one with a .633 hitting percentage and took advantage of five Lady Tiger errors.
 
In the second set, McNeese State turned a 10-6 lead into a 20-11 advantage as the Cowgirls didn't look back. Grambling State finished the set with six kills and nine errors.
 
A Chasity Nicks kill in the third set gave Grambling State a 4-3 lead, but the Cowgirls answered with a 13-9 run to grab a 16-13 advantage after a Shanna Spree kill.
 
The Lady Tigers could never recover from the McNeese State run in falling in three sets.
 
Inside the Numbers
· Grambling State finished the match with 24 kills on 98 attacks (.041 hitting percentage).
· McNeese State registered 44 kills, including 20 in the first set, on 99 attacks for a .354 hitting percentage.
· The Lady Tigers recorded 30.0 points, 42 digs, 23 assists, four blocks and two service aces.
· The Cowgirls finished with 56.0 points, 49 digs, 43 assists, seven blocks and five service aces.
 
Up Next
Grambling State will take a week off to prepare for its first home match of the season as the Lady Tigers play host to Jarvis Christian College at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
