Lady Tigers win thrilling five-set match

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University volleyball team jumped out to a two-set lead only to watch Prairie View A&M storm back and tie the match at 2 after four sets, but the Lady Tigers closed things out with a resounding, 15-5, fifth set to defeat the Lady Panthers, 3-2, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match at the GSU Men's Gymnasium during Senior Night on Tuesday evening.
 
Grambling State (10-22 overall, 6-10 SWAC) swept the season series over Prairie View A&M after Tuesday's win and now hold the tiebreaker over the Lady Panthers. The Lady Tigers took the opening two sets, 25-17, 25-16, but watched the Lady Panthers claim sets three and fourth, 25-18 and 25-13. However, Grambling State never looked back in the fifth set with a 15-5 win.
 
Chasity Nicks led the Lady Tiger offense with 12 kills, on 35 total attacks, with three errors for a .257 hitting percentage. Jaivieanna Jones, one of seven seniors honored during Tuesday's game, tallied 11 kills and hit .381, while Tess Reynolds came off the bench to contribute 10 kills. L'Muriell Thrower, playing in her final home match, registered a double-double of 22 assists and 11 digs, while Sheila Borders tallied 21 assists. Erineka Mollere, who is a graduate student, recorded a team-high 17 digs and senior Kevreion Ward added 12 digs.
 
Tamaira Armstrong finished with a double-double of 15 kills and 15 digs to pace Prairie View A&M (5-24, 5-11). Cetara Carter chipped in with 13 kills, while Jaylan Thomas and Victoria Pearson added 11 and 10, respectively. Erica Jimenez dished out a match-high 29 assists and Jaelyn Oakes tallied 16 assists. Defensively, Christen Augustine tallied a match-high 27 digs.
