Boyd reaches 1,000-point milestone against USM

HATTIESBURG, Miss. | Jazmin Boyd finished with a team-high 10 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark in her collegiate career, but it wasn't enough as the Grambling State University women's basketball team dropped a 68-47 decision to Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon in Reed Green Coliseum.
 
The Lady Tigers (1-2) trailed after one period, 15-9, and were outscored in the second, 13-11, as Southern Miss (2-0) took a 28-20 lead into the half. Both teams got their rhythm shooting in the third quarter as the Lady Eagles took a 50-41 advantage in the final quarter.
 
Boyd's highlight came just three minutes and nine seconds into the game as she sank a jumper to give her 1,000 points for her collegiate career. The senior guard from Hattiesburg, Miss. finished the day with 10 points, including going 3-for-3 from the foul line. Shakyla Hill added eight points, seven boards, seven steals and three assists, while Markisha Body tallied seven points, three rebounds and one block.
 
Shonte Hailes led three Southern Miss players in double figures with 18 points, on 6-of-8 shooting, with seven boards, five assists and a pair of steals. Megan Brown added 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and one block, while Alarie Mayze chipped in with 14 points, six steals and three rebounds. Kelsey Jones came off the bench to provide 10 points and four boards.

Turning Point
Southern Miss raced out to an 8-0 lead after a bucket by Shonte Hailes with 7:04 left in the opening quarter. A jumper by Jazmin Boyd not only put Grambling State on the board, but the milestone point with 6:51 remaining in the period.
 
The Lady Tigers closed the deficit to 12-9 after a 3-pointer by Markisha Body with 1:14 left in the first, but the Lady Eagles used a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to grab a 22-9 advantage after a free throw by Alarie Mayze.
 
Grambling State cut the margin to single digits at 22-15, after a free throw by Jazmine Forte with a little more than five minutes left in the half.
 
The Lady Tigers got as close as six points, 24-18, after a free-throw by Shakyla Hill, but Southern Miss would take a 28-20 lead into the half.
 
The Lady Eagles extended the margin to as many as 14 points (40-26) in the third quarter after a Mayze jumper with 5:53 remaining in the period, but back came the Lady Tigers with a 15-7 run, capped by a Body jumper, which cut the margin to 47-41 with 23 seconds left in the quarter.
 
A pair of Madison Connally-Banks free throws with 5:21 remaining cut the Southern Miss lead to 55-45, but the Lady Eagles proved to be too much and responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a Hailes layup, to extend the advantage to 64-45 with 2:31 left.

> Southern Miss shot 54 percent (28-of-52) from the field and 69 percent (11-of-16) from the free-throw line
