GRAMBLING, La. | Alyssa Ozuna scored in the 10th minute and
Kaylee Holt added a goal in the 27th minute as the Grambling State University women's soccer team earned its second consecutive shutout win, blanking Mississippi Valley State, 2-0, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Grambling State (5-6 overall, 2-0 SWAC) have scored nine goals in the past two conference games as Sunday's match ended in the 79th minute when lightning was detected in the area. This was the fourth straight game that was shortened due to weather related issues.
After a scoreless opening nine minutes, the Lady Tigers earned a free kick from just outside of the penalty area. Ozuna's kick banged off the bottom of the crossbar as Mississippi Valley State goalkeeper Sydney Newport was unable to stop the shot as Grambling State took a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Tigers doubled the margin in the 27th minute when
Brittany Terry and
Jasmine Smith assisted on Holt's goal as Grambling State took a 2-0 advantage into the second half.
The best opportunity for the Lady Tigers in the second half came in the 51st minute as
Florence David's long shot banged off the crossbar and out of play.
Mississippi Valley State (3-5-2, 0-1-1) had a chance to cut the deficit in the 69th minute as Karenth Zabala-Terrazas's free kick was saved by
Rita Siaha.
Turning Point
Grambling State notched a pair of first-half goals and played solid defense to earn its second consecutive SWAC win.
The Lady Tigers put Mississippi Valley State under pressure with two goals within the first 30 minutes and the Devilettes could not recover.
