GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, but rally in the fourth before holding off Alcorn State, 61-56, on Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Grambling State (6-10 overall, 3-1 SWAC) led 13-11 after one quarter and took a four-point advantage, 29-25, into the half. Alcorn State (2-14, 1-3) outscored Grambling State, 20-9, in the third and took a 45-38 lead into the final period.
Shakyla Hill paced the Lady Tiger offense with 15 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
Jazmin Boyd added nine points, while
Camryn London chipped in eight.
De'Asia Brown led three Alcorn State players in double figures with 19 points, four boards, one assist and one steal. Jada Hargrove and Charisma Walker each recorded 13 points.
Turning Point
Gambling State held a slim, 13-11 lead at the end of the first period and used a 10-0 run to take a 23-13 advantage after a
Camryn London three-point play with 4:42 remaining in the half.
Alcorn State closed the half strong with a 12-6 run as the Lady Braves trailed, 29-25, at the break.
With the game tied at 35 with 3:27 left in the third, Alcorn State used a 10-0 run, capped by a Kirdis Clark layup, giving the Lady Braves a 45-35 lead.
Grambling State responded with an 11-1 run, capped by a
Takerra Parsons bucket with 7:18 remaining in the final period, tying the game at 46.
The Lady Tigers sealed the game down the stretched as
Shakyla Hill scored on a layup with 44 seconds left and Grambling State got free throws by
Mylashia Yancey and
Jazmin Boyd to seal the victory.
