Hill’s bucket lifts Lady Tigers to thrilling victory

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Shakyla Hill drove the lane with 10 seconds left and banked in a jumper off the glass as the Grambling State University women's basketball team completed the Texas road swing with a thrilling, 64-63, win over Prairie View A&M in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Monday afternoon at the Nicks Recreation Center.
 
Grambling State (8-10 overall, 5-1 SWAC) trailed early on, but took a slim, 17-16, lead into the second quarter. The Lady Tigers outscored the Panthers in the second, 20-19, and entered the break with a 37-35 advantage. Prairie View A&M used an 11-3 run during a five-minute stretch of the third quarter and took advantage of Grambling State's sluggish shooting to grab a 53-48 lead heading into the final period.
 
Hill, who went 11-of-19 from the floor, paced Grambling State with a game-high 28 points, eight rebounds, seven steals, three assists and two blocked shots. Jazmin Boyd, who scored 12 points in the first half, finished with 16 points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist. Justice Coleman recorded eight points, four boards and two assists.
 
Shala Dobbins, who fouled out with 7:09 remaining, finished with 12 points, three rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block. Artavia Ford, who registered her fifth personal foul with 5:44 left, recorded 11 points and two boards. La'Neique Nealy added 10 points, five assists, four boards and two blocks.
 
Turning Point
After falling behind by as many as four  points in the first quarter, Grambling State battled back and used a 9-3 run, capped by a Camryn London jumper, to take a 26-18 advantage with 7:23 left in the first half.
 
Prairie View A&M (6-9, 3-2) battled back and used a 12-4 run over the next five minute to tie the game at 30 after a Shala Dobbins three-point play with 2:23 remaining in the second.
 
The Lady Tigers got buckets by Mylashia Yancey, Shakyla Hill and Jazmin Boyd during the final two minutes as Grambling State took a 37-35 lead into the break.
 
The Panthers opened the third strong and used an 11-3 run over a five-minute stretch to take a 46-42 lead after a free throw by Ke'Asia Williams with 3:56 remaining.
 
Prairie View A&M extended the advantage to 53-48 right before the end of the third period as Jordyn Penniman drained a 3-pointer from the left wing with 39 seconds left.
 
Grambling State opened the final period on a 7-2 run to tie the game at 55 after Boyd sank a 3-pointer from the left wing with 8:11 left.
 
The Lady Tigers got buckets by Hill and Boyd to give GSU a 60-56 lead with 4:54 left, but a jumper by Sierra Shepherd with 2:41 remaining cut the margin to 60-59.
 
Prairie View A&M grabbed a 63-62 advantage when Jhyrah Cobb scored with 15.4 seconds remaining. After two timeouts, Hill got the ball and drove the lane, banking a shot off the glass to give Grambling State a 64-63 lead with 10.3 seconds left.
 
The Panthers had one final opportunity, but Cobb's shot was blocked and rebounded by Hill, who ran out the clock, to give the Lady Tigers the victory.

> Grambling State was 25-of-53 (47.2 percent) shooting and 12-of-20 (60.0 percent) from the charity stripe
> Prairie View A&M shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the free-throw line
