Lady Tigers fall short in Mississippi

Struggles continue with loss to Devilettes

Box Score ITTA BENA, Miss. | The Lady Tigers trailed all night in a tough battle against Mississippi Valley State and fell 68-57 at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The loss is the Lady Tigers' eighth in a row.

Grambling (2-18, 1-8 SWAC) trailed by six at the end of the first quarter and struggled to find the basket all night, shooting just 33 percent from the field for the game. However, the Lady Tigers managed 20 offensive rebounds which kept them relatively close throughout the night but couldn't find a way to slow down an efficient Devilettes team that shot 50 percent from the field for the game.

Junior guard Justice Coleman led Grambling as she scored at least 20 points in her second straight game, this time dropping 20 against Valley State on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, including three 3-pointers. Fellow Lady Tiger Candice Parramore chipped in with 10 points and four assists, but struggled from the field as she hit just 2-of-13 shots and had a game-high six turnovers. However, she buried 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.

As a team Grambling committed 23 turnovers while forcing 18 against the Devilettes.

The Devilettes were led by Azaria Howard who scored a team-high 18 points while teammate Shelli Thigpen finished with 16 points and nine rebounds in the victory.

> Mississippi Valley was 23-of-46 (50 percent) from the field and 20-of-28 (71 percent) from the foul line

> Valley State pulled down 34 rebounds, with 10 coming on the offensive end
> The Lady Tigers finished with 20 points in the paint, 13 bench points, 15 second-chance points and four fast break points
> The Devilettes recorded 32 points in the paint, 11 bench points, eight second-chance points and six fast break points

The Lady Tigers continue conference play on Saturday, February 8 as they host Southern University. Tip-off against the Lady Jaguars is set for 3 p.m. at Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center in the first of two games of the SWAC doubleheader. The men's game will follow shortly after.

The Grambling doubleheader has been dubbed "Rocket Mortgage Day."
