GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team fell short, 61-58 to Alcorn State in their first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) loss of the season on Tuesday night in the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Candice Parramore led the Lady Tigers (2-4 overall, 1-1 SWAC) with 11 points, three rebounds and one assist while
Brandi Washington chipped in 10 points, two rebounds, one assist, one steal and block.
Deja Mitchell paced Alcorn State (2-5 overall, 2-1 SWAC) with 13 points, four rebounds, one assists and three steals. Cayla Obillo chipped in 10 points, one assists and two steals.
After one quarter, Alcorn State led 11-9 and then led, 26-23 going into the break. Grambling State took their largest lead of the night (33-28) after a lay up by Alexis Holt with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter but the Lady Braves took the slight advantage, 43-41 at the end of the period. Alcorn grabbed their largest lead of the night after a three-pointer by Cayla Obillo as the Lady Braves led 50-43 with 6:51 remaining.
Grambling State got as close as a one point game, 59-58 with 10 seconds remaining, but that's as close as they would get in the loss after Parramore scored a crucial basket after a lethal crossover and appeared to be fouled, but the officials called a charging violation and did not overturn the call after a closer look at replay. The basket and free throw would have tied the game for the Lady Tigers.
