ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. | Danya Kingsby led three Grambling State University men's basketball players in double figures with 20 points as the Tigers dropped an 83-61 decision to New Mexico on Monday night at The Pitt.
The Tigers trailed, 37-33, at the half and trailed by double digits early in the second half before cutting the margin to seven. However, the Lobos proved to be too much in picking up the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State (0-3) opened the game on a 7-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by
Danya Kingsby with 17:39 remaining in the first half
- New Mexico (2-1) responded by an 18-8 run over the next six minutes to grab a 20-15 advantage after a layup by Jaeleen House with 11:36 left.
- The Tigers tied the game at 20 after a putback bucket by
AJ Taylor with 9:38 left in the opening half
- The Lobos used a 9-2 run, capped by a Jamal Mashburn Jr. jumper to push the margin to 29-22 with 6:40 remaining
- Grambling State answered with a 9-2 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 31 after a layup by Kingsby with 2:29 left
- New Mexico outscored GSU, 6-2, down the stretch to take a 37-33 lead into the break
- The Lobos opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 47-35 advantage after a Gethro Muscadin jumper with 16:48 remaining
- A jumper by Jalen House gave New Mexico a commanding 61-44 lead with just over 11 minutes left
- The Tigers responded by using a 10-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by
Cameron Christon to cut the deficit to 61-54 with 8:43 remaining
- Grambling State never got any closer than seven points down the stretch as New Mexico pulled away for the victory

- Grambling State shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the floor and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the free-throw line
- Dana Kingsby led Grambling State by shooting 7-of-14 from the field for 20 points, three assists and two rebounds

The Tigers recorded 28 points in the paint, 15 points off 12 New Mexico turnovers, 14 bench points, 10 fastbreak points and nine second-chance points
- New Mexico was 31-of-68 shooting (45.6 percent) and 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) from the charity stripe
- Jamal Mashburn Jr. and Jaelen House each poured in 18 points to pace the Lobos
- Taryn Todd added 16 points, on 6-of-12 shooting, with a game-high four blocked shots
- Javont Johnson registered a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards
- Gethro Muscadin tallied 12 points and eight rebounds
- The Lobos finished with 34 bench points, 34 points in the paint, 29 points off 23 Grambling State turnovers, 18 fastbreak points and 11 second-chance points

Grambling State wraps up its season-opening four-game road swing with a trip to Ames, Iowa to face Iowa State. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. on Sunday.
