Lady Tigers Put Up Valiant Effort at Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. | Ciera Ellington led the Grambling State University women's basketball team with 18 points, but the Lady Tigers couldn't overcome the Florida, falling 70-55 at the Exactech Arena at the Stephen O'Connell Center on Friday night.
 
Ellington put on a solid performance for the Lady Tigers, shooting a blazing 7-of-9 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 15-10 with 2:56 left to play in the first quarter, Grambling State (2-1) utilized a 6-0 run, capped by a layup from Trasity Totten, to claim a 16-15 lead heading into the second period.
  • The Gators regained the lead with 7:52 left in the half when Emanuely De'Oliveira drained a three, putting Florida (3-2) up 18-16
  • The Lady Tigers tied the game at 24-24 on another layup by Totten with 2:42 left.
  • However, Florida embarked on a 7-0 run to go up, 31-24, heading into the break.
  • The Gators outscored the Lady Tigers, 19-9, in the third period, building a 50-33 lead, their largest lead of the contest.
  • Grambling State continued to fight back in the fourth quarter, whittling Florida's lead to as little as nine points.
  • After Ellington drained a 3-pointer to cut the Gators lead to 59-50 with 3:27 left to play, UF went on an 11-5 run down the stretch to secure the 70-55 win.

  • The Lady Tigers shot 20-of-51 from the field (39.2 percent)
  • The Gators went 24-of-56 on field goal attempts (42.9 percent)
  • Grambling State connected on 4-of-16 shots from three-point range (25.0 percent)
  • Florida drained 6-of-20 from behind the arc (30.0 percent)
  • GSU hit on 73.3 percent of its free throws (11-of-15)
  • UF sank 12-of-23 attempts from the free-throw line (69.6 percent)
  • The Lady Tigers scored 14 points off of 15 turnovers
  • The Gators tallied 18 points on 19 turnovers
  • UF held a 30-15 advantage in bench points
  • The Gators also dominated second-chance points, outscoring the Lady Tigers 12-3
  • Both teams racked up 26 points in the paint
  • Florida had three players score in double-figures
