JACKSON, MISS.| Monday evening's game between Grambling State and Jackson State was deemed historic as NBA TV partnered up with the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) to televise the first ever collegiate doubleheader on the network in honor of Black History Month. In the match-up the Grambling State University women's basketball team had three players score in double-figures, but it wasn't enough as they fell 82-66 to Jackson State in conference play on Monday evening at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.
Alexus Holt paced Grambling State (7-8 overall, 6-5 SWAC) with 19 points, three rebounds, four assists and one steal.
Ariel Williams chipped in 16 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, while
Candice Parramore added 11 points, two rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Ameshya Williams led Jackson State (11-5, 10-1) with a double-double, including 20 points, 14 rebounds, one assists, one steal and four blocks. Keshuna Luckett, Dayzsha Rogan and Jariyah Covington each tallied 13 points, while Elexis Peyton added 10 points.
Jackson State raced off to a 21-15 start at the end of the first and outscored GSU 19-16 in the second period to take a 40-31 going into the break.
In the third period, the game got as close as an eight-point deficit (48-40) after a 3-pointer shot by Parramore, assisted by Williams, Ariel. JSU closed the period out with a 13-6 run capped by a free-throw by Williams, Ameysha as Jackson State led, 61-46.
JSU stretched the advantage at the beginning of the fourth with a seven-point run and did not look back as Grambling State lost the point battle in that period, 21-20.
Inside the Numbers
> Grambling State was 23-of-67 (34.3 percent) shooting and 14-of-20 (70.0) percent) from the charity stripe
> Jackson State shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field and 71.0 percent (27-of-38) from the free-throw line
> GSU registered 32 rebounds, including 14 off the offensive glass
> TXSU pulled down 40 rebounds, with 23 coming on the defensive end
