GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team utilized a dominant second-half performance to erase a 10-point halftime deficit, defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 83-74 on the Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center on Monday night.
Ariel Williams scored a game-high 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting, to go along with five assists, four rebounds and one steal. Williams was also perfect from the free-throw line, going 9-for-9, a splashing both of her attempts from three-point range.
Justice Coleman also had a monster game, contributing 22 points, with three rebounds, two steals and one assist. Alexus Holt poured in 16 points, six rebounds and four assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State (7-11 overall, 4-3 SWAC) fell behind quickly with UAPB sprinting out to a quick 10-2 lead.
- Trailing 23-14 with 1:36 to go in the opening quarter, the Lady Tigers settled down, ending the period with a 7-2 run, cutting the Lady Lion lead to 25-21.
- Arkansas-Pine Bluff (8-10, 4-4) worked its way to an 11-point lead, 32-21, with a 7:53 to go in the half. A layup by Coleman at the 3:36 mark pulled GSU within five points, 36-31, but UAPB pushed its lead back to double-digits, 43-33, heading into the break.
- Grambling State found its rhythm early in the 3rd quarter, utilizing the three ball. After the Lady Lions built its largest lead of the contest, 45-33, Williams responded with the shoot from behind the arch. Coleman then found her stroke, knocking down back-to back threes to quickly cut UAPB's advantage to 45-42 with 8:13 to play in the third quarter. Coleman connected from downtown once again to pull the Lady Tigers within one. 47-46 at the 6:53 mark.
- Leah Morrow knocked down a pair a free throws giving GSU its first lead of the contest, 48-47 with 6:29 to go in the third.
- Cierra Ellington closed the third period with jumper, giving Grambling State a 60-58 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
- With the score tied at 68 with a 4:59 to play, Williams gave GSU to lead for good, 70-68, with a mid-range jumper.
- Grambling State seized control of the contest, closing the game out on a 13-4 run to claim the 83-74 triumph.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the floor and 81.8 percent (27-of-33) from the free-throw line
- The Lady Tigers finished with 30 points in the paint, nine points off 11 UAPB turnovers, 11 bench points, 8 fast-break points and 10 second-chance points.
- Ariel Williams scored her season-high (25) on Monday night,
- Alexus Holt, notched her 14th double-digit scoring performance of the season, while Justice Coleman picked up her 11th.
- Monday's victory marked the third consecutive win for Grambling State.
- Arkansas Pine-Bluff shot 37.3 percent (28-of-75) from the field and 60.0 percent (9-of-15) from the charity stripe
- Khadijah Brown recorded 24 points, on 11-of-21 shooting, with 15 rebounds, two blocks, one steal and one assist
- The Lady Lions finished with 32 points in the paint, 17 points off 14 GSU turnovers, seven bench points, seven second-chance points and two fast-break points
