Coleman Scores 18, GSU Falls to JSU

JACKSON, Miss. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team couldn't hold on to a slim halftime lead, falling to the No. 1 team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Jackson State, 81-68 on Saturday afternoon at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for GSU.

Justice Coleman notched another double-figure scoring performance, racking up 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including draining 4-of-7 from 3-point range. 

Alexus Holt contributed 16 points with four rebounds and three assists, while Ariel Williams registered 11 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Leah Morrow also had an efficient outing, snagging 10 rebounds with eight points, five assists and two steals. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Jackson State built a quick 7-2 lead, Grambling State (7-12 overall, 4-4 SWAC), responded with mid-ranger jumper from Ariel Williams. Alexus Holt tied game at 7-7 with a three-pointer at the 7:48 mark of the first quarter.
  • Both teams traded buckets throughout the majority of the opening frame. Cierra Ellington nailed a bucket from behind the arc to give GSU a 23-19 lead heading into the second period. 
  • A bucket by Leah Morrow gave Grambling State its largest lead of the contest, 27-22, with 7:43 to go in the half. 
  • JSU (10-6, 8-0) continued to keep pace with GSU, tying the game three times before halftime. GSU led 44-42 at the break. 
  • After Jackson State pushed ahead 55-50 with 1:23 left in the third, Morrow knocked down a deep two-pointer to cut the lead to 55-52 with 57 seconds to go. JSU sank a pair of free-throws to end the quarter and snag a 57-52 lead. 
  • JSU opened up 59-52 lead to open the fourth quarter. Coleman drained a jumper from the inside the paint to pull GSU within five, 59-54. Williams then splashed a three-pointer trimming the JSU lead to 59-56 with 8:31 remaining. 
  • However, Jackson State seized control of the rest of the contest, claiming the 81-68 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the floor and 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the free-throw line   
  • GSU finished with 16 points in the paint, 12 points off 17 JSU turnovers, 13 bench points, seven fast-break points and three second-chance points
  • Leah Morrow notched her season-high in rebounds (10) 
  • Jackson State finished with 44 points in the paint, 16 points off 19 GSU turnovers, 19 bench points, eight fast-break points and 16 second-chance points
  • JSU had two players register double-doubles. Ameshya Williams scored 23 points with 11 rebounds, while Daja Woodard posted 13 points and 10 rebounds.
