Holt Scores 28 points as GSU Cruises to Victory over Alabama State

GRAMBLING, La. | Senior guard Alexus Holt poured in a season-high 28 points, as the Grambling State University women's basketball team cruised to an 88-56 victory, its largest of the season, over Alabama State at Wills Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center on Saturday afternoon.

As a team, the Lady Tigers relied on hot shooting from behind the arch, dominating the Lady Hornets for much of the afternoon. GSU went shot 46.2 percent from deep, connecting on 12-of-26 attempts. 

Holt turned in a phenomenal performance, going 10-of-16 from the field, including 6-of-10 from three-point range. She also racked up a game-high eight rebounds and two steals, along with four assists. 

Ariel Williams and Justice Coleman complimented Holt's outing, scoring in double-figures. Williams contributed 16 points with three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Coleman posted 13 points while snagging five rebounds with four assists and one steal. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In a sign of a what was to come, Grambling State ( 9-12 overall, 6-4 SWAC) drained two quick 3-pointers within the first two minutes of the contest. Ariel Williams connected from long-range to open the scoring, then following an Alabama State (7-12, 6-4) free-throw, Justice Coleman splashed one from behind the arch to give GSU a 6-1 lead at the 8:24 mark of the first period. 
  • Colbi Maples gave GSU it's largest lead of the opening frame after she knocked the down a jumper from downtown to put the Lady Tigers up 13-5 with 5:40 to go in the quarter. 
  • In the second quarter, GSU snatched a 10-point lead, 25-15, following a paid of free throws from Alexus Holt with 8:59 to play. With the score set at 29-21, Holt sparked a 13-4 run over the next 3:19 to help the Lady Tigers build a 42-25 advantage with 3:55 to go in the half. 
  • GSU led ASU 48-32 at the half. 
  • Grambling State kept the pressure on Alabama State in the second half, opening the third period on with 14-7 run to craft a 62-39 lead with 3:03 to go. Holt nailed another three-pointer at the buzzer giving GSU a 68-47 lead heading into the fourth.
  • The Lady Tigers led by as much as 38 points in the closing period, before cruising to the 88-56 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State shot 53.4 percent (31-of-58) from the floor and 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from three-point range
  • GSU finished with 28 points in the paint, 27 points off 17 ASU turnovers, 23 bench points, four fast break points and 18 second-chance points
  • Alabama State finished with 32 points in the paint, nine points off 16 GSU turnovers, 27 bench points, two fast break points and three second-chance points
  • Shmya Ward led ASU with 14 points with three rebounds and one assist
