CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. | It was tough sledding for the Grambling State University women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Houck Stadium, as the Tigers suffered a 4-1 loss to Southeast Missouri State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams had a pair of goals waved off midway through first half. On a corner kick opportunity, Southeast Missouri State's (1-1-0) goal was negated by a hand ball. On the ensuing possession, GSU's (1-1-0) Valentina Guzman placed a beautiful shot into the back of the net, but offsides was called on the Tigers.
- Cayla Koerner gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead with a goal in 39th minute.
- SEMO pushed the lead to 2-0 with a score by Kiana Khedoo in the 48th minute.
- In the 69th minute, Adrianna Pratt was called for a foul inside the box, awarding SEMO a penalty kick that the Red Hawks cashed in, putting the Tigers in 3-0 hole.
- Sophia Lezizidis got GSU on the board with her first collegiate goal in the 89th minute, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
- SEMO tacked on an insurance goal less than a minute later, securing the 4-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State attempted five shots, putting two on frame
- Southeast Missouri State took eight shots, placing five on goal
- GSU committed four fouls while SEMO was whistled for 10
- The Redhawks held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks
- Grambling State was called offsides three times. Southeast Missouri State was called offsides once.
- Madison Covey-Taylor and Aimee Benton split time in goal for GSU with Covey-Taylor handling first half duties and Benton assuming second half action.
