Grambling State Falls to California

BERKELEY, CA | Grambling State battled hard but came up short against the University of California (5-0), falling 86-63 at Haas Pavilion on Wednesday night. Despite an impressive performance on the glass, California's efficient shooting and strong third-quarter surge proved too much to overcome.

Kahia Warmsley led the Tigers with a team-high 16 points, adding four rebounds and two steals. Douthshine Prien contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and a team-high five assists, while Lydia Freeman chipped in 10 points and four rebounds on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting.

Grambling's defense was active throughout, forcing 26 turnovers and converting them into 29 points. However, turnovers on their end were costly, as the Tigers committed 22, allowing the Golden Bears to score 19 points off those miscues.

The Golden Bears were led by Lulu Twidale, who scored a game-high 19 points on 4-of-7 shooting from deep. Marta Suárez added 16 points and five rebounds, while Ioanna Krimili finished with 15 points and six assists. California's bench also made a significant impact, outscoring Grambling's reserves 24-14.

Grambling kept the game competitive in the first half, entering halftime down 28-43. However, California pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 29-22 behind eight made three-pointers. Cal finished the night shooting 44.4% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc, compared to Grambling's 32.9% and 12.5%, respectively.

In the paint, Grambling managed a 34-32 edge but struggled to keep pace in fast-break opportunities, where California held a 12-8 advantage. The Tigers also tallied nine second-chance points thanks to their 19 offensive rebounds.

Grambling State moves to 2-3 on the season.
