GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State women's basketball team cruised to a 69-52 wire to wire victory over Alabama A&M University Monday night at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Grambling State (14-8 overall, 8-3 SWAC) came out in a full court press that stifled Alabama A&M's (10-13 overall, 5-6 SWAC) offensive attack. The Lady Tigers started off the game with a 11-3 run to gain early control of the game.
The Tigers' defense was dominant throughout the first half forcing 13 turnovers. Also, forcing the Bulldogs to shoot 6-of-29 (20.7 percent) from the field and 0-of-7 from deep. Grambling State took a huge 39-14 lead into the halftime break.
DeMya Young led the way for Grambling scoring 17 points on 6-14 (42 percent) shooting.
Zayla Tinner contributed 14 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals.
Alabama A&M scored 38 second half points after being held to only 14 in the first half. Outscoring the Lady Tigers in both the third and the fourth but it was not enough to overcome the large deficit.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State shot 27-62 (43.5 percent) from the field, 7-17 (41.2 percent) from three-point range and 8-14 (51.7 percent) from the free throw line.
- The Lady Tigers scored 34 points in the paint, 22 fast break points and 29 points off turnovers.
- Alabama A&M shot 18-60 (30 percent) from the field, 7-20 (35 percent) from beyond the arc and 9-19 (47.4 percent) from the free throw line.
- DeMya Young was the game's leading scorer with 17 points.
- Grambling State scored 23 bench points.
