GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team secured its first Southwestern Athletic Conference victory of the season, defeating Southern University 2-0 on Friday evening at the GSU Soccer Complex.
With the win, Grambling improves to 4-6-3 overall and 1-0-1 in SWAC play, while Southern falls to 2-9-1 and 1-3-1 in the conference.
Grambling set the tone early when forward
Alana Aiken opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing a setup from
Nyla Dore-Anderson to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The advantage held through halftime as the Tigers defense limited the Jaguars to zero shots in the opening frame.
In the second half, Grambling continued to control possession and pace.
Aiken struck again in the 86th minute, capitalizing on assists from
Sophia Lezizidis and
Cindy Norfles to seal the 2-0 victory.
The Lady Tigers fired off 21 total shots, including 11 on target, while holding Southern to just three shots the entire match.
Lezizidis led the attack with four attempts on goal, while
Liana Bryant,
Chloe Bryant, and
Kaylen Jankans each added quality chances.
Goalkeeper
Jaliyah Clark earned the clean sheet, facing just three shots and making one save in the full 90 minutes.
