SAN DIEGO, Calif. | Grambling State could not erase a slow first half on Tuesday night, falling 78–68 at San Diego inside Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The Tigers trailed by nine at the break and made multiple pushes in the second half, pulling within a single point with just over nine minutes remaining, but the Toreros' perimeter shooting and near-perfect free-throw performance proved too much to overcome.
Antonio Munoz led Grambling State with 21 points and six rebounds, attacking the paint throughout the night and generating 20 free-throw attempts. Derrius Ward added 14 points, while Randarius Jones posted nine points and five boards. Jamil Muttilib provided a spark off the bench with nine points, seven rebounds, and five steals.
Despite shooting 40 percent from the field, the Tigers struggled from deep, finishing 2-for-13 from three. GSU stayed in the game by dominating fast break opportunities 30–22 and controlling the paint 40–20. The Tigers also grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, leading to 14 second-chance points.
San Diego countered with steady outside shooting and near-flawless free-throw work. The Toreros knocked down nine three-pointers and finished 31-for-32 at the line. Ty-Laur Johnson and Toneari Lane each scored 15 points, while Juanse Gorosito added 13.
Grambling State opened the second half with renewed energy, sparked by Munoz's scoring burst to cut the deficit to 37–39. The Tigers briefly took the lead at 52–51 with 9:34 remaining, but San Diego immediately responded with a 5–0 run and maintained control the rest of the way.
GSU falls to 3–2 on the season.
