THIBODAUX, La. | The Grambling State University volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Nicholls State on Saturday afternoon inside Stopher Gymnasium, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-17).
The Lady Tigers (0-6) showed sparks throughout the game, particularly at the net where they collected 12 total blocks.
Nicholls (8-1) controlled the offensive tempo with a .280 team hitting percentage and 46 total kills.
Kenya Lucas paced Grambling with seven kills and four blocks.
Denver Watkins added six kills and seven digs.
Rihianna Brown contributed eight kills and hitting percentage of .467, while
Ra'Niya Brown anchored the defense with five blocks.
Alayna Howard directed the offense with 23 assists, eight digs, and a .500 hitting percentage.
Leisey Keli'i led the back row with 14 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1: Grambling hung close early with kills from Lucas and Watkins, but Nicholls pulled away late behind Tamara Chavez to win 25-19.
Set 2: The Lady Tigers battled point-for-point midway through, highlighted by a block from
Ra'Niya Brown, but the Colonels closed on a 7-3 run to edge GSU 25-21.
Set 3: GSU continued to pressure at the net, but Nicholls' balanced attack, led by Chavez and Maelie Chupin, sealed the match with a 25-17 finish.
