Tigers Get Defensive as Offense Explodes in Win over Delta Devils

Frank Warren became the first back since 2001 to rush for over 1,000 yards.
Greenville, Miss.---The Grambling State Tigers defense proved stingy today as the G-Men offense ate up big chunks of yardage in a, 35-14, win over the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State to move to 6-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The Tigers led by linebacker Cliff Exama held the Delta Devils to only 285 yards total offense (91 rushing) with the bulk of that coming on two big plays for scores; while in contrast quarterback Danny Reyes lead the Tigers offense as Frank Warren went over a 1,000 yards rushing on the season as they pounded out 516 yards of offense.

The Tigers opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when Reyes connected with Kiare Thompson on a 77 yard strike and after a Zoltan Riazzo extra point led 7-0.

Neither teams would score again in the half, however, with just under ten minutes remaining in the third quarter Reyes found Ryan Allen for his only reception of the game, a 16 yard dump over the middle for a score (Riazzo, PAT).

Down, 14-0, the Delta Devils quickly responded and capped off a three play 89 yard drive with an 89 yard touchdown pass from Oliver Hughes to Paul Cox, Jr. (Carlos Sanchez, PAT).

The fourth quarter would prove to be action packed as Reyes called his own number on a one yard plunge for a score, followed by an 85 yard sprint to the end zone by Warren (Riazzo, PAT) to put Grambling up 28-7.

Down but not out Valley answered with a 41 yard touchdown pass from Hughes to Cox (Sanchez, PAT) to pull within two touchdowns. But a 39 yard scoring run from Warren (Riazzo PAT) would ultimately seal their fate.

Warren led the Tigers strike with 27 carries for 209 yards and two scores; while Reyes connected on 11-of-15 passes for 259 yards and two scores. Bakari Maxwell had four receptions for 126. Defensively, Exama turned in four solo and six assisted tackles for a total of 10. Jabari Powell had an excellent game with six tackles (3.5 for loss of yardage) including two sacks.

The Tigers (6-1, 6-0 SWAC) will return to action next weekend when they travel to Little Rock, AR to face the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Delta Literacy Classic.
