Irondale, Ala. – The Grambling State Lady Tigers softball team dropped a dramatic, 11-10, eight inning contest Friday to the Lady Hornets of Alabama State in The Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament at The Shea Brothers Softball Complex in Irondale, Ala.
Grambling jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first thanks largely in part to a Raven Turner two RBI single scoring Taylour Smith and Latrice Woods. The Lady Tigers would extend their lead to 7-0 in the second once again courtesy of Turner who belted a three-run home run over the left field fence also scoring Woods, and Angela Perez.
The Lady Hornets came alive in the bottom half of the second inning when Megan Dixon hit a grand slam, making the score 7-4. Two batters later, Mercedes Frazier hit an RBI single that scored Cloud and The Lady Tigers seven run lead was cut to only two runs at 7-5.
In the bottom of the third inning, Cloud hit a bases load RBI single followed by a fielder's choice that tied the game at 7-7. In the fourth inning, ASU again loaded the bases and Brehanna Rodrigues doubled down the line scoring Brittnei Price and Breya Wright giving the Lady Hornets its first lead 10-7.
GSU would scored three runs in the top of the fifth, tying the game at 10 before Cloud drove in the winning run for ASU in the eighth.
The Lady Tigers were led at the plate by Smith who went 3-for-3. Woods and Perez went 2-for-5 each with two runs apiece while Tuner was 2-for-5 and tied a game high five RBI.
Dixon was solid for the Lady Hornets going 2-for-2 with one homerun and also with five RBI's . B. Rodrigues was 3-for-3, with three runs scored and two RBI. Cloud finished the day for ASU going 3-6, scoring one run and two RBI.
The Lady Tigers season has come to an end as they were eliminated from the tournament, Alabama State will face Southern University in an elimination game Saturday at 1 pm.
