Lady Tigers Season Slated to Open in ULM Leadoff Classic

GRAMBLING, Louisiana (February 7th, 2013) - The Grambling State University (GSU) Lady Tigers' Softball team will begin their 2013 campaign today through Sunday by participating in the University of Louisiana-Monroe (ULM) Leadoff Classic held in Monroe, Louisiana.

GSU will play five games this weekend and will open the tournament this afternoon at 4 p.m. against the University of California Santa Barbara.  This evening they will face the home team; the ULM Warhawks at 6 p.m.  The "Lady Tigers" will play two games on Friday.  GSU will face Wichita State at 1:15 p.m. and Southesast Missouri State tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.   The "Lady Tigers" will wrap up the tournament on Sunday afternoon when they face in-state foe Northwestern State (La.) University at 1:15 p.m. 

This will be a good early season test for GSU.  "We will really be tested this weekend", said Head Coach Wilbert Early.  "These teams have great speed and agility and play excellent defense." 

The Lady Tigers' will rely on veteran leadership this season.  Mikiesha Henson will bring a strong presence in the outfield, while Jassitte Richardson and Cabrayanna Turner will present a duel threat as they can play infield and outfield. 

GSU was picked to finish sixth in the Pre-Season Southwestern Athletic Conference Coaches poll.  They will have a total of 12 home games this season.  The home opener for GSU will be on February 19th against Texas College.
