Fourth seeded Grambling State upset top seeded Jackson State

Box Score Decatur, Al. (May 8, 2013) --The Grambling State Lady Tiger Softball team pulled off a stunning 5 - 4 victory over the Eastern division No. 1 seed, Jackson State, in the first round of the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament.
 
GSU entered today's game on a hot streak after sweeping Southern University to end their regular season; cementing their place in the conference tournament.
           
 The Grambling State Lady Tigers struck first when Mikiesha Henson singled bringing Alyssa Fontillas home. The second inning proved to be a strong showing for GSU, who pulled away with three runs for a score of 4 – 0.
           
The Lady Tigers (GSU) maintained their lead until the bottom of the fifth when Jackson State scored four runs to tie the game at four.
 
The score was remained deadlocked at four and the teams needed two extra innings before a winner was declared. It was Grambling who prevailed and proved to be the better squad. Henson scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning on a right field single by Briana Maiden.
 
Angela Perez pitched a complete game and earned the win for Grambling State University Lady Tigers.   On the mound, Perez faced 37 batters, allowed 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 errors, and 3 strikeouts. Jasmine Warren and Breea Jamerson were on the mound for Jackson State with Jamerson taking the loss.
 
With this win, Grambling State remains in the Winner's Bracket and will face Alabama State University on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur, Alabama.
