BATON ROUGE, La. – The Grambling State University softball team dropped a doubleheader 3-1, 3-0 at Southern on Friday afternoon at Lady Jaguar Field.
In game 1, the teams got through two innings without either one scoring a run. Southern (14-16, 6-7 SWAC) got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning, but Grambling (12-29, 2-12 SWAC) answered in the top of the fourth.
Mercedes Williams scored on
Hailey Haynes' sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-all.
The Lady Jaguars picked up two more runs in the fifth and held the Lady Tigers scoreless in the final two frames to seal the win.
Haynes (two) and Williams (one) accounted for Grambling's three hits in the first game.
Caitlin McDowell pitched six innings and allowed eight hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out three for GSU.
Southern's Aubrion James tossed a two-hit shutout in the second game to complete the doubleheader sweep of Grambling. The Lady Tigers' two hits came via Haynes and
Allye Hartley.
The teams conclude the series with a single game at 11 a.m. on Saturday afternoon.
