Polk-Hilliard’s double-double not enough against #16 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. | Dallas Polk-Hilliard posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as No. 16 Wisconsin picked up an 84-53 victory over the Tigers on Saturday at the Kohl Center.
 
Grambling State (6-7) trailed, 39-27, at the half and were outscored, 45-26, in the second.
 
Polk-Hilliard was 6-of-13 from the floor and drained three 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 17 points, along with a team-high 10 rebounds and two assists. Lasani Johnson came off the bench to provide 14 points, two boards, one steal and one assist.
 
Ethan Happ paced Wisconsin (9-2) with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists. D'Mitrik Trice registered 14 points, three assists and two rebounds, while Nate Reuvers added 10 points, four boards and one assist.
 
Turning Point
Wisconsin raced out to an 8-2 advantage after two Ethan Happ free throws with 16:53 left, but the Tigers closed the gap to 13-11 after a Devante Jackson 3-pointer with 13:45 remaining.
 
The Badgers quickly extended the margin to 18-11 after a Happ jumper with 12:47 remaining, but Grambling State used an 11-3 run over the next five minutes to tie the game at 22 after a Lasani Johnson 3-pointer with 7:11 left in the first half.
 
Wisconsin closed out the opening half on a 17-5 run to take a 39-27 lead into the break.
 
A free throw by Kobe King with 16:17 remaining gave the Badgers a 47-27 lead and the Tigers could not recover from the huge deficit.
 
Inside the Numbers
> Grambling State shot 38.0 percent (19-of-50) from the floor and 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the charity stripe
> Wisconsin was 28-of-57 (49.1 percent) from the field and 20-of-26 (76.9 percent) from the foul line
> The Tigers registered 26 rebounds, including 20 on the defensive glass
> The Badgers pulled down 41 rebounds, with 30 coming on the defensive end
> Grambling State finished with 27 bench points, 16 points in the paint, 11 points off 10 Badger turnovers, 11 second-chance points and two fastbreak points
> Wisconsin recorded 32 bench points, 28 points in the paint, 24 points off 17 Tiger turnovers, 10 second-chance points and eight fastbreak points

Grambling State concluded its non-conference portion of the schedule and will open Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Alabama State. Tip-off against the Hornets is set for 7:30 p.m. in Montgomery, Ala.
