LORMAN, Miss. – The Grambling State University Lady Tigers' domination on the court secured an 82-57 victory over the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University in the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex Monday tonight.
"I think it was a growth game. I'm proud of the girls, we played as a team. The assistant coaches and I always tell them if you win in practice, you will win the game," said head coach
Nadine Domond.
In a game that featured a pair of defenses that like to pressure the ball and force turnovers, Grambling was able to come out on the better end. The Lady Tigers forced 23 Lady Brave turnovers on nine steals while never relinquishing the lead in the game.
Four Lady Tigers scoring in double digits helped them dominate Alcorn throughout the game. Junior
Mariah Gilliam led the Lady Tigers with 23 points, three boards, and two assists while also shooting 4-for-5 from the three point line. With a game high of 22 points, junior
Yosha Watson finished 10-for-16 from the field, five assists, and six steals, while Shanice Poole contributed 14 points, three rebounds, five assists, and one steal. Off the bench,
Kiana Jones added 10 points and four rebounds for the Lady Tigers.
Coach Domond also went on to say that, "The upperclassmen really stepped up. They understand this is the second half of the season and their performance tonight showed their intensity."
The Lady Tigers (8-14, SWAC 5-6) will return to the court at 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 14
th as they host Texas Southern University (12-9, SWAC 9-1) in a Southwestern Athletic Conference match- up in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
