Lady Tigers Win Against Lady Panthers

Exciting win comes with strong defensive game, three GSU players with double digits

Box Score
GRAMBLING -- The Grambling Lady Tigers (4-1 SWAC, 7-9 overall) upset the Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers (1-3 SWAC, 5-8 overall) 69-66 in overtime in their third Southwestern Athletic Conference home game.

Both teams refused to give up anything in the Saturday (January 16) matchup. The teams ended the first quarter with 16 points each. Bre'nae Andrews was the leading scorer with 22 points and six rebounds. By halftime, she had 15 points. Shakyla Hill finished with a double-double, 10 points and 11 rebounds. Two-time SWAC Player of the Week, Jazmine Boyd, had 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Prairie View had four players in double figures. Alexus Parker, who took a hard block by John'ea Thompson in the fourth, led her PVAMU squad with 15 points. She was short of a double-double by one rebound.  Larissa Scott had a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Jeronia Allen and Lamaria Cole both ended the night with 11 points each.

The Lady Tigers were down by one at the break. Two turnovers within the last minute caused the Lady Tigers to lose the lead right before halftime.
The Lady Tigers called a timeout to recuperate at 7:13 in the third after the Lady Panthers extended their lead with a 4-0 run. Grambling State responded by adding five points, three from Chantiara Lewis and two from Hill, before a media timeout at 4:26. The Lady Panthers were not taking no for an answer. They came back with seven unanswered points. The Lady Tigers struggled with turnovers after the end of the first half, and, by the third, Prairie View had scored 17 off of GSU turnovers.

The Lady Tigers then closed the gap to two with less than four minutes left in regulation, but the Lady Panthers were holding on tight to their lead until the one minute mark when Boyd went up for two on a fast break to tie the score at 62. It all boiled down to 8.8 seconds left and it was Prairie View's ball after the Lady Tigers were called for a shot clock violation. A Lady Panthers' pass went out of bounds and GSU got the ball back at 3.2. Hill went up for the long shot and it was in then out. The Lady Tigers won 69-66 in to overtime.
