Shakyla Hill led her team with 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals as the Grambling State University Lady Tigers (
14-12; 11-4 SWAC) defeated the Lady Golden Lions of University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, 67-49.
The game was competitive in the first half, but things changed after half time.
"Our defensive momentum changed when Chantiara Lewis came into the game," said head basketball coach Nadine Domond. "We were 22-0 in the second half of the game." During the first two quarters the Lady Tigers held off their opponents for a good amount of time with shots from
Bre'nae Andrews and
Shakyla Hill, but missed shots and turnovers gave the Lady Golden Lions an advantage they needed to close the points gap then tying the score at 30. At halftime, Andrews had 10 points along with two rebounds and Hill had nine points and two rebounds. Niya Head of Pine Bluff had eight points and three rebounds at the half and a total of 10 points, five rebounds and two assists when the game was over.
The Lady Tigers used great teamwork, good defense and strong offensive skills in the third quarter as head coach
Nadine Domond's players scored a quick ten points within the first two minutes of the quarter and left the Lady Golden Lions scoreless for three and a half minutes.
Leading by as much as 19 points in the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers could not be stopped. A total of 50 rebounds were pulled down in the second half by the Lady Tigers.
"Everybody on my team is vital," added Domond. "We play a certain brand of basketball that people want to see."
Andrews of Grambling State finished with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists. Head of Pine Bluff put up 10 points and pulled down five rebounds.
The Lady Tigers play Mississippi Valley State University on Monday (February 29) at 6 p.m. at Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center on the GSU campus.
